Membership on the Board of Directors
The appraisal district board of directors in Texas is made up of five to thirteen members. Members of the board do not receive compensation for service on the board but may be reimbused for actual and necessary expenses incurred in the performance of their duties. Other than a county assessor-collector serving as a non-voting director, board members serve two-year terms beginning on January 1 of even-numbered years. The appraisal district taxing units may use staggered terms.

Selection and Removal of Board Members

Voting members ot the board are appointed by a vote of the appraisal district taxing units. If the county assessor-collector is not appointed to the board the county assessor-collector serves as a nonvoting director. The county assessor-collector may not be eligible to serve on the board under some Texas laws (Section 6.05(b) or Section 6.24(b)).

The governing body of a taxing unit may ask for the recall of a board member of an appraisal district. A vacancy on the board of an appraisal district is filled by appointment by the taxing unit that nominated the person.

Qualifications of Board Members

A board member must be a resident of the appraisal district and must have resided in the district for at least two years immediately preceding the date the individual takes office. A county assessor-collector serving as a non-voting director is exempt from this requirement. An individual may not be eligible to serve on an appraisal district board of directors under some Texas laws (Sections 6.035, 6.036, and 6.03).
